YouTube Terminates 20 'Ghost Creator' Channels for AI Spam
YouTube has taken down 20 channels linked to a network of "AI-supercharged ghost creators" — accounts that used human actors reading AI-generated scripts to produce sensationalized political videos for ad revenue. The action follows an investigation by Semafor and researchers from Riddance AI, which traced the network back to Caleb Chan, a YouTuber and "growth-hacker."
The Network and Its Operation
The network operated as a "modern media studio" with 97 "news anchors, editors, and scriptwriters," according to Chan. These channels produced videos with heated — and often inaccurate — attacks on Democratic politicians like California Gov. Gavin Newsom and New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani. The content was designed to stoke partisan outrage and drive engagement, making money through YouTube's ad system.
What YouTube Did
In a statement to Semafor, YouTube said: "We have strict policies against spam and deceptive practices. After a review, we terminated 20 channels — including all 13 referenced in this article and seven related channels — for violating our spam policies."
By Thursday, most of the channels were unavailable. Some displayed a message indicating removal for violating YouTube's rules, while others had been deleted or scrubbed of content by their owners.
Chan's Defense
Chan confirmed the details of the report but framed his operation as ideological rather than commercial. He called Semafor's coverage a "hit piece," adding that his channels "shared detailed exposés of hypocritical socialists like Mamdani."
Implications for AI-Generated Content
This case highlights the growing tension between AI-generated content and platform policies. While YouTube allows AI-generated content in many cases, it strictly prohibits deceptive practices and spam. The crackdown signals that platforms are actively hunting for networks that use AI to scale content production artificially.
For developers building AI-powered content tools, this is a warning: scale without human oversight (or with misleading framing) can get your entire network banned. Always ensure your content adheres to platform policies and clearly discloses AI involvement when required.
